London College – A Journey Through Time (1966–2026)

Founded by Mr. Harold V. S. Chan Lam on 10 January 1966, London College began at 34 Remy Ollier Street, Port-Louis, just two years before Mauritius gained independence. Starting with around one hundred students, the College quickly grew in reputation for discipline and academic excellence.

A second department opened at Pope Hennessy Street in 1968. By 1971, London College earned “B” Status from the Ministry of Education, and in 1974 achieved the distinguished “A” Status, affirming its commitment to high educational standards.

Infrastructure expanded with Block B in 1977 and Block C in 1994. The College also hosted significant events, including the Jubilee Chinaware Exhibition in 1985 and the visit of Baroness Hooper from the U.K. Department of Education and Science in 1988. In 1972, the School Farm was inaugurated, offering students hands-on agricultural learning.

In 1995, a modern four-storey building was inaugurated, introducing Computer Studies and later H.S.C. Computing—making London College one of Mauritius’s pioneers in this field. The Pearl Jubilee in 1996 was marked by a Science and Technology Exhibition entitled “Technology of Tomorrow.”

The late 1990s saw participation in the National Quality Awards and the launch of an international Student Exchange Programme with Collège de Trois Mares in Réunion Island, strengthening cultural and educational ties.

A new era began in 2000 with the appointment of Mr. Wills Lee Sok Hing as Rector. In 2006, leadership was passed to Mr. Terry Chan Lam, whose steadfast commitment, visionary guidance, and devoted service have continued to shape and strengthen the College in his enduring role as Rector and Manager to this day. During this period, London College proudly hosted Science World 2000, a landmark event featuring the celebrated “Moon Rock,” brought from the United States through the courtesy of H.E. Penny Korth, U.S. Ambassador. The exhibition attracted more than one hundred thousand visitors, standing as a defining milestone in the school’s history.

On 10 May 2012, the College mourned the passing of its founder, Mr. Harold V. S. Chan Lam, O.B.E, C.S.K, G.O.S.K. His vision of discipline and excellence continues to guide the institution. In 2016, London College celebrated its Golden Jubilee, honouring half a century of academic achievement and service.

From 2016 onwards, London College has continued to innovate while remaining true to its founding principles. Under the far-sighted leadership of Mr. Terry Chan Lam, whose vision and dedication have guided the modernisation of the school’s buildings and facilities, the College has been transformed into a vibrant and nurturing learning environment. Always striving for the well-being and growth of both students and staff, he has devoted his utmost efforts to creating a school that supports learning, inspires excellence, and serves the best interests of the entire London College community.

This forward-thinking vision is clearly reflected in the creation of modern playgrounds, offices, classrooms, staffrooms, and toilets, the adoption of renewable energy through photovoltaic panels, and the upgrading of facilities with enhanced amenities. Collectively, these improvements have created a safe, inspiring, and enriching environment where students can excel and thrive, and staff can work with dedication, professionalism, and pride.

In 2019, Block D was extended, adding classrooms, a Design and Technology Laboratory, a Music Room, and staff facilities. New subjects such as Design & Technology and Music were introduced, alongside clubs like the Science Club (2015) and Health Club(2019).

In 2025, students brought distinction to the College by winning Second Prize in the Science Quest Competition, First Prize in the National Football Competition (Boys), and sweeping awards at the National Drama Festival in Mandarin Language. These achievements highlight their creativity, discipline, and excellence.

As London College prepares to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee in 2026, it stands as a beacon of learning in Port-Louis. With more than 1,350 students today, the College continues to nurture academic excellence, creativity, discipline, and character formation.

Across six decades of extraordinary progress and transformative innovation, London College, under the distinguished, enlightened and dedicated leadership of Mr. Terry Chan Lam, has remained steadfast in upholding its founder’s noble vision: to educate, inspire, and cultivate thoughtful, capable, and forward-thinking minds for the future.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on our journey, we remain committed to the values of excellence, discipline, and service that guided our founder. London College continues to prepare students for life, equipping them to meet tomorrow’s challenges with dignity, resilience, and purpose.
